The 1st Workshop on AI Applications for Achieving the Green Deal Targets (AI4GD), held during the 20th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations, served as a dynamic platform for presenting pioneering initiatives like the NERITES project. Hosted by the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece, from June 27 to June 30, 2024, the event was enriched by presentations from esteemed figures and the NERITES project was presented by Dr. Michailidis Iakovos and Mrs. Asimina Dimara from the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), and by Prof. Stelios Krinidis from the International Hellenic University (IHU).
Conducted both in-person and remotely, the workshop emphasized the crucial role of artificial intelligence in environmental conservation and carbon reduction efforts. The discussions aimed to address the complex challenges associated with transforming the European Union into a climate-neutral continent by 2050. The AI4GD Workshop encouraged interdisciplinary approaches, focusing on leveraging AI-driven solutions to meet the ambitious targets set by the European Green Deal.
The NERITES project, highlighted during the workshop, exemplifies significant advancements in underwater robotics. Its applications, extending from pollution monitoring to the detection of underwater cultural heritage (UWCH), demonstrate how the integration of advanced AI algorithms into smart sensors can greatly enhance the exploration and management of underwater sites.
This initiative not only aligns with the goals of environmental sustainability but also showcases the potential of AI in preserving and understanding our aquatic environments
