NERITES at the “Widening the Big Blue Horizon” International Conference

The NERITES project was presented during the “Widening the Big Blue Horizon” International Conference, held December 4–6, 2024, at the Domotel Xenia in Volos, Greece, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. This conference brought together experts, researchers, and professionals focused on the protection and sustainable promotion of Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH).

On December 4, 2024, the NERITES project was presented Mr. Angelos Manglis, Founder of Atlantis Consulting, delivered a presentation titled “Developing Precision Autonomous Remote Surveying of Underwater Cultural Heritage Monuments and Artefacts with Torpedo-Shaped Vehicles: The Case of NERITES.”

The presentation highlighted NERITES’s focus on developing innovative, cost-effective, and non-destructive technologies for monitoring underwater cultural heritage. By utilizing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) equipped with advanced tools such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL), the project enables precise environmental and chemical analysis while ensuring minimal disruption to archaeological sites. NERITES also incorporates advanced imaging techniques, including AI-based photogrammetry, to assess degradation and preservation needs.

The NERITES project’s participation in the International Conference underscored its pivotal role in advancing underwater cultural heritage preservation. By combining cutting-edge technology, environmental awareness, and sustainable practices, NERITES paves the way for more efficient, non-invasive, and scalable solutions in heritage management. The insights shared at the conference highlight the project’s contribution to global efforts to protect cultural assets, foster scientific collaboration, and ensure that underwater heritage remains a vital part of our shared history for generations to come.
