Baia, Italy

The submerged archaeological site of Baia, located in the Bay of Naples within the Campi Flegrei volcanic region, represents a paradigmatic case of coastal transformation driven by long-term bradyseismic activity. Originally developed as a high-status Roman resort between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD, the area progressively subsided, resulting in the partial and, in many cases, complete submergence of its urban fabric.

Today, the Underwater Archaeological Park of Baiae encompasses an extensive area of submerged cultural heritage, including maritime infrastructure, residential complexes, baths, and richly decorated architectural elements such as mosaics and colonnades. The site is internationally recognized for its contribution to the development of underwater archaeological methodologies, particularly in situ conservation and site management practices.

Pilot testing

NERITES pilot operations will focus on the Villa dei Pisoni, a well-preserved submerged complex featuring colonnaded porticoes, mosaic pavements, and a variety of construction materials. Its archaeological significance, combined with environmental exposure and sustained visitor pressure, makes it a representative case study for the monitoring of material degradation processes and site vulnerability.
